Single-seater kayak in Vayrac

Canoe or kayak: Which one to choose for my stay?

We often wonder what truly differentiates a kayak from a canoe. Beyond their origins—kayaks from the Inuit and canoes from Native Americans—they possess distinct characteristics. Depending on your experience, the length of your stay on the Dordogne River, or your gear, one or the other may be more suitable. We'll tell you everything you need to know in this article to help you choose!

The Canadian canoe

This is THE boat for canoeing trips on the Dordogne. Genuine canoes made in Canada, our Old Town and Nova Craft are perfectly suited to most of your adventures.

Available for booking subject to availability during peak season. Contact us for more information.

It's right for me if:

  • I'm leaving for several days and I'm loaded down
  • I am travelling independently with my luggage (boat option not available with luggage transport)
  • There will be two of us per canoe (it's not very stable with three)
  • I'm going with my dog (flat bottom so he can lie down)
  • I prefer sitting on a bench
  • I am comfortable with a single paddle

The two-seater kayak

This is our signature green and yellow kayak on the Dordogne. A 100% French-made kayak, lightweight, stable, and ideal for beginners, adults alone with a child, or groups of friends looking for fun!

It's right for me if:

  • I'm going away for several days and I'm not carrying much
  • I'm going with the luggage transport option
  • I want a light and very stable boat
  • I'm going with friends and we want to have fun
  • I prefer sitting with my legs stretched out and my belly against my back (or the backrest option at €6/day)
  • I am comfortable with a double paddle
  • I want a self-bailing boat (if I capsize, the water empties itself)

The single-seater kayak

Ideal for solo paddlers or groups of an odd number, our single kayaks come with backrests. Maneuverable and lightweight, they allow space for a 55L container at the rear and a small dry bag in front of your feet.

It's right for me if:

  • I am alone or in a group of odd numbers
  • I like having my own boat
  • I handle the double paddle like no one else
  • I feel comfortable on a river

So? Which canoe or kayak will you choose for your next trip on the Dordogne?
